Fatigue, decreased sex drive, and loss of muscle tone are all symptoms of aging. But is it always a sign of low testosterone? Many men have these symptoms as they age. And, because of recent advertising, many have begun taking testosterone.
Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testicles. It helps maintain:
- Bone strength by preventing excessive bone loss
- Keeping fat distribution in a typical male pattern
- Muscle strength and mass
- Facial and body hair
- Red blood cell production
- Sex drive
- Sperm production
Before you can begin testosterone therapy, your doctor will order blood tests. You’ll need to have at least two tests to confirm results. And, you and your doctor will need to talk about the benefits and side effects to decide if therapy is right for you.
Once you begin therapy, you’ll need regular blood tests to make sure it's working and is safe for you.
Testosterone therapy can be safe and effective if it’s done correctly. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you. For more information or to schedule an appointment with a ProHEALTH Care provider, visit Search all providers.
