ProHEALTH Fair Promises to be Family Fun Event

ProHEALTH Care Associates, LLP, a multi-specialty medical practice in Lake Success, will present its Eleventh Annual Family Health Fair in memory of Vitas Gerulaitis at Roosevelt Field, Saturday, May 3, 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is the fourth year the event will take place at the Garden City shopping mall.

Barrett’s esophagus is a common pre-malignant condition of the esophagus related to chronic gastroesophageal acid reflux. Some patients are more sensitive to damage from acid reflux. In these circumstances, acid reflux from the stomach can cause erosions, ulcerations and damage to the lining of the esophagus leading to a change in the lining of the esophagus noted on endoscopic examination. It has been estimated that approximately 3 million Americans have this changed lining, Barrett’s esophagus. It appears that patients with Barrett’s esophagus are 100 times more likely to develop cancer of the esophagus as compared to the general population. This particular type of cancer, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, has been the fastest-rising cancer in the United States over the last several decades. When detected, the prognosis is usually very poor. Therefore, doctors screen patients with chronic heartburn for Barrett’s esophagus and if present, patients are followed closely in an attempt to detect the early development of cancer.

Until recently, only surgical therapy was available for attempts at curative therapy. Recent advances in endoscopic techniques have provided means for treatment of early cancer and precancerous lesions without major surgery. These techniques have included photodynamic laser therapy, Argon plasma coagulation, endoscopic mucosal resection and the latest technique, radio frequency ablation. This new technique utilizes a generator, delivery system and catheter attached to an upper gastrointestinal endoscope. This allows the physician to more precisely target and deliver this form of energy in order to more consistently destroy the pre-malignant tissue. Clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy with improved safety over prior treatments utilized to destroy (ablate) the Barrett’s lining. This treatment is now available at ProHEALTH Care Associates, LLP in Lake Success. Dr. Matthew McKinley and Dr. Gary Weissman, Co-Chiefs of Gastroenterology and their associates at ProHEALTH have been involved in the diagnosis, treatment and studies of Barrett’s esophagus for more than 20 years. They are happy to have this new tool available for the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus.
